World’s largest gathering of fuel cell vehicles

The world’s largest assembly of fuel cell cars and buses is on display in San Francisco this weekend for the United Nation's World Environment Day conference. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared climate change an indisputable threat and unveiled a plan to combat global warming by setting goals for reducing California's emissions of greenhouse gases. In April his administration released the California Hydrogen Highway Network Blueprint, which calls for a $54 million investment from government and industry over five years to increase the number of hydrogen filling stations from currently 16 to more than 50 and the number of fuel cell cars to 2,000.

As long as oil is available and affordable there will be no real pressure to advance this technology. Gas/diesel-electric hybrids are going to be dominant for the next 20 years. (Although hybrid cars are perceived as "green", they may actually prolong the fossil fuel age. On the other hand, certain aspects of hybrid technology, such as regenerative braking, are certainly going to be standard features of fuel cell vehicles.) For the next two decades, California and some other densely populated areas worldwide, will most likely serve as testing grounds for building a hydrogen infrastructure and for operating fleets of fuel cell vehicles.
